What Not To Wear

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

The only thing I love more than clothes is...  books about clothes!

Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London
Rambunctious Froggy hops out into the snow for a winter frolic but is called back by his mother to put on some necessary articles of clothing.

Too Purpley! by Jean Reidy

Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing by Judi Barrett
Pictures of animals wearing clothes show why this would be a ridiculous custom for them to adopt.

Action Rhyme:
Red, red is the color I see!
If you're wearing red, then show it to me!
Stand up, take a bow, run around
Then sit right back down on the ground!
(Additional colors: blue, black, brown, purple, pink, white, green, orange, etc.)

Song:  "I'm Going to Take a Sweater" (Tune:  Jolly Good Fellow)
I'm going to take a sweater, I'm going to take a sweater
I'm going to take a sweater...
When I go out today!
(Additional verses:  rain boots, sunglasses, umbrella, mittens, jacket)

What's In A Name?

January 23, 2013

Today's Story Time theme was NAMES!  We read...

From Anne to Zach by Mary Jane Martin

Princess Baby by Karen Katz

Name Songs/Fingerplays:

Two Little Blackbirds

Two little blackbirds, sitting on a hill
One named Jack, one named Jill
Fly away Jack, fly away Jill
Come back Jack, come back Jill

Two little blackbirds, sitting on a cloud
One named Quiet, one named Loud
Fly away Quiet, fly away Loud
Come back Quiet, come back Loud

Two little blackbirds, sitting in the snow
One named Fast, one named Slow
Fly away Fast, fly away Slow
Come back Fast, come back Slow

BINGO

There was a farmer, had a dog
And Bingo was his name-o
B-I-N-G-O
B-I-N-G-O
B-I-N-G-O
And Bingo was his name-o

We made Name Trains during Craft Time!
We have some very creative kiddos who added
train tracks, cargo and background scenery!

I'm Still Hungry!

Wednesday, January 16, 2012

This morning, Miss Tiffany visited us from the Children's Museum!  She had some really fun activities for us, including a fishing expedition, shaving cream ABC's and What's in the Bag?

This afternoon, we worked up an appetite reading some books about one of my favorite things:  FOOD!  We looked at...

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Follows the progress of a hungry little caterpillar as he eats his way through a varied and very large quantity of food until, full at last, he forms a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep.

Don't Forget the Bacon by Pat Hutchins
A little boy goes grocery shopping for his mother and tries hard to remember her instructions.

Jamberry by Bruce Degen
A little boy walking in the forest meets a big lovable bear that takes him on a delicious berry-picking adventure in the magical world of Berryland.

Today's Fingerplays:

Ten Red Apples

Ten red apples growing on a tree

Five for you and five for me

Help me shake the tree just so

And ten red apples fall down below

One, two, three, four, five

Six, seven, eight, nine, ten!

Making Fruit Treats

I am an apple growing on a tree

If you want some applesauce, just cook me

I am a grape growing on a vine

If you want some grape juice, smoosh me fine

I am a strawberry growing on the ground

If you want some jam, mash me around

I am on orange growing on a tree

If you want some orange juice, just squeeze me

These are the Very Hungry Caterpillars we made today!
Craft Time is the BEST!!!

No, David!

Wednesday, January 9, 2012

Today we explored books by the author David Shannon!  Thank you to everyone who braved the rain to join us for Story Time today. :)

No, David by David Shannon
A young boy is depicted doing a variety of naughty things for which he is repeatedly admonished, but finally he gets a hug.

David Gets in Trouble by David Shannon
When David gets in trouble, he has excuses right up until bedtime, when he realizes he really is sorry.

David Goes to School by David Shannon
David's activities in school include chewing gum, talking out of turn, and engaging in a food fight, causing his teacher to say over and over, "No, David!"

We also played a No, David! game.  Miss Dinah had a bag of items, some of which were good for library books...  And some of which were not so good!  With the children's help, we divided the items into the No, David! box and the Yes, David! box.  The consensus was:

No, David!
candy
scissors
crayons
marker
glue

Yes, David!
library card
plastic bag
bookmark
umbrella

We made our own David faces for the craft today!

Mustache Story Time!

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

Today we featured books about hair -- on your head and on your face!

No Haircut Today by Elivia Savadier
Dominic refuses to get his hair cut, no matter how much his mother wants him to or how bad it looks.
Mustache! by Mac Barnett
When extremely good-looking King Duncan builds more and more tributes to his handsome face, neglecting kingdom projects and repairs, his loyal subjects find a mustachioed solution.

My Daddy's Mustache by Naomi Panush Salus
A little boy learns why his father won't shave off his mustache.

Moosetache by Margie Palatini
A moose's moostache is too big to control until he meets Ms. Moose, who has her own hair problem. They conquer each other's heart and their hair issues.

Our craft today was making our very own moustache!
We picked our favorite styles and cut them out of felt!
