Let the Wild Rumpus Start!

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

Be sure you check out the Maurice Sendak art exhibit at the Julia Ideson Building through May 2nd! To celebrate this really cool event, we had a Wild Rumpus of our own at storytime today.

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
A naughty little boy named Max is sent to bed without his supper... But his room transforms and he sails away to the land of the wild things where he becomes their king!

We made our very own boats to sail away to where the wild things are!

Then we colored Wild Things pictures...

And finally, we made crowns so that we could be King or Queen
of the Wild Things too, just like Max!

Dressed to the... Nines

Who Has This Tail? by Laura Hulbert
Short and fuzzy, long and scaled...  No matter their size and shape, tails aren't just hanging around -- they're useful!  This book invites readers to guess the owner of nine tails, and then turn the page to see the animal and its tail in action.

This Jazz Man by Karen Ehrhardt
Set to the tune of "This Old Man," the text of this picture book introduces readers to nine different jazz singers, dancers and musicians.  Bee-bop, skeddle-de-wop!

Time to color the number NINE!

National Library Week!

Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Thank you to the Children's Museum staff for joining us at 10:30am to talk about "raising a reader." The rest of the day, we celebrated National Library Week with books about...  Well, books!

The Wonderful Book by Leonid Gore
When various forest animals discover a mysterious object in the woods, they each use it for a different purpose...  Until a boy finds it and begins to read, much to the animals' delight!

Dinosaur Vs. The Library by Bob Shea
Dinosaur loves to share his roar with the cow, the baby chicks, even a shy turtle.  But when he gets to the library, can he learn to control his ROAR?

Let's color a bookmark to celebrate National Library Week!
We LOVE books!

Eight... Is Enough!

Bears! Bears! Bears! by Bob Barner
Let's learn about all eight species of bears around the world!  There are polar bears and panda bears...  But have you seen a sloth bear?  Or a spectacled bear?

The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle
The farm animals invite a busy little spider to enjoy other activities, but she persists and produces a thing of both beauty and usefulness: a lovely web!

It's time to color the number EIGHT!  It's GREAT!

Little Lambs Eat Ivy

Wednesday, April 1, 2015

My favorite thing about the upcoming Easter holiday is the baby animals:  Bunnies! Chicks!  And my favorite, Lambs!

Wee Little Lamb by Lauren Thompson
A newborn lamb, too shy to say hello to the rabbit or sing with the robin, is finally drawn out to play by a tiny field mouse.

Counting Ovejas by Sarah Weeks
What do you do when you can't sleep?  Count sheep in Spanish and English, course!
